Moving a Manufacturing Data Warehouse to the Cloud
How we would move an on-premises data warehouse to the cloud without interrupting plant operations.
The Problem
An older on-premises data warehouse is slow and hard to maintain, but the plants run continuously and can't afford reporting downtime.
The Architecture
The new cloud lakehouse runs alongside the old warehouse. Outputs are compared side by side before each plant is moved over, one at a time. Table versioning makes it easy to compare old and new results.
The Solution
Each plant moves only after its numbers match. The old warehouse is retired after the last plant is moved.
Why This Approach
Running old and new side by side costs a bit more for a while, but it keeps the risk low. Nobody has to trust the new system until it has proven itself.
